Hoodie Design — DCTC Automotive Department

Project type

Clothing Design

Location

Dakota County Technical College

This project was brought to us by the Instructors of DCTC’s Automotive Department as a client, with a consultation directly with them where questions were being answered to establish their needs as a customer. They were in search of an eye-catching hoodie design to be included in the DCTC merchandise store with the intention for it to be specifically made for their interns in the Automotive Department. With such an open range of potential designs to be conceived available, to reach out and grab just one was difficult, but with time one idea really stuck with me, as one of the questions asked to the instructors was how they’d describe their instructing environment; where they mention it as lighthearted and fun. Choosing to prod at that idea, I imagined how the intern is likely to be viewed, a tough-looking baby mechanic on a creeper working underneath a car; that visual is intended to showcase the intern’s infant-like stage of the learning curve they’re likely at. With the final execution of this visual I believe this design to be successful in capturing the head turn and interest they were looking for while also encapsulating the idea of the new guy. The aim being to not humiliate them too much with the baby remaining a cool figure with some stylish shades and traditional mechanic attire. The software I used in the creation of the design Photoshop, where firstly the creation of a photo manipulated reference allowed me to craft the reference I envisioned. The use of a drawing tablet was utilized to accurately capture a hand-drawn rugged aesthetic. Then Illustrator was used to vectorize the illustration, the mockup visualization of the design onto a hoodie was done with Photoshop.
