Visual Comm. — Scientific Editorial Illustration
Project type
Illustration, Article
Location
Dakota County Technical College
This student project had us choosing between a few Scientific Editorial articles to create an illustration for, the one I landed on having the talking point about how tap water can harm the brain growth of pregnant women’s babies and newborns. After thoroughly reading through the article to pick up any details I thought would be visually impactful I got to brainstorming and sketching, ultimately leading toward the illustrative style and layout of the cover. I wanted to emphasize that the tap water was harmful to the baby visually, so I struggled with many concepts but eventually I landed on the idea of this visual static and brain shrinkage to show the effects the paper was attempting to convey simply. The incorporation of a Dutch angle in the composition aids the viewer to feel tension having the text pull them around the illustration to find its deeper meaning. The software I used for the creation of assets, Photoshop with a reference of stock imagery and the use of a drawing tablet for illustration.
